What is ovarian vein embolization (OVE)?

What is ovarian vein pain and PCS?

Are you experiencing chronic pelvic pain, heavy periods, or pain after intercourse? You may be dealing with ovarian vein pain or pelvic congestion syndrome (PCS). This condition happens when veins in the pelvis don't drain properly, causing blood pooling, inflammation, and pain.

Not everyone with PCS has symptoms, but when they do occur, they can be uncomfortable and persistent. If you have chronic pelvic pain from PCS, ovarian vein embolization may be the answer. This procedure is minimally invasive and provides long-lasting relief by blocking blood flow to the enlarged veins in the pelvis, causing them to shrink and function normally again.

Who is a candidate for OVE?

Pelvic congestion syndrome (PCS) is a condition experienced by many women, causing symptoms like chronic pelvic pain, heavy periods, pain after intercourse, or varicose veins in the groin and upper legs. If you're dealing with any of these symptoms, ovarian vein embolization may be able to help.

You may be a candidate for OVE if you have:

  • Aching pelvic pain
  • Pain that worsens at the end of the day
  • Had multiple pregnancies
  • Enlarged varicose veins in the vulva, legs, upper thighs, or gluteal area
  • Painful, heavy periods
  • PCOS or inflammatory bowel issues

How is OVE performed?

Our interventional radiologists perform ovarian vein embolization in an outpatient setting. The procedure is not painful and usually takes less than an hour. You'll be able to go home the very same day and will have minimal recovery time.

Here's how OVE is done:

  • First, the doctor uses X-ray guidance to insert a catheter, or a very small tube, through your upper leg.
  • Next, the catheter is guided to the enlarged ovarian veins.
  • Then, microscopic beads and coils are released through the catheter and into the enlarged ovarian veins to block the blood flowing to those veins.

Blocking the enlarged veins redirects blood flow, reducing inflammation and alleviating the symptoms you have been experiencing.

More than 85% of women experience relief after OVE.1

What are the benefits of OVE?

OVE is a minimally invasive, nonsurgical procedure that provides lasting relief from the painful, disruptive symptoms of PCS. Other benefits include:

  • Minimally invasive—no incisions or scarring
  • Requires only conscious sedation, so you can go home the same day
  • Requires virtually no recovery time
  • Relieves chronic pelvic pain, pressure, and discomfort
  • Improves quality of life and may reduce abnormal bleeding

FAQs

Learn more about ovarian vein embolization

Ovarian vein embolization is very successful, with more than 85% of women experiencing relief following the procedure.1

Ovarian vein embolization is very safe, especially with an experienced doctor. Some people may experience minor bruising and soreness where the catheter was inserted. Most people feel little pain and heal quickly. Your doctor will discuss risks and benefits with you during your appointment.

Getting ready for OVE is simple. You'll meet with your doctor to review your health history and do a physical exam. If your gynecologist has ruled out other causes of pelvic pain, you may get an ultrasound or CT scan to confirm PCS. Before your procedure, you may be advised to manage symptoms with anti-inflammatories, compression stockings, leg elevation, or a heating pad. Your doctor will explain the procedure in detail and answer any questions you have.

Recovery after ovarian vein embolization is usually quick and easy. It's an outpatient procedure, so you'll go home the same day with just a small bandage. Most people have little pain and are walking right away. You may feel mild soreness for the first day or so. Other symptoms often begin to improve within 2–4 weeks. Your doctor will check in regularly after your procedure to see how your recovery is going.

Our centers take most insurance plans. However, always check with your insurance provider to understand what your plan covers and any costs you may incur, such as a co-pay.
